In a significant push towards achieving the Federal Government’s 70% broadband penetration target by 2025, MTN Nigeria and TD Africa, a leading technology distributor in Sub-Saharan Africa, have joined forces to accelerate the rollout of broadband services across the country.
The partnership was spotlighted at a recent event held on October 6, 2022, at Yudala Heights, Victoria Island, Lagos. The forum brought together channel partners from TD Africa’s extensive network to explore MTN’s fixed broadband propositions and understand the immense opportunities available for business growth in Nigeria’s ICT sector.
Speaking at the event, Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, General Manager, Fixed Broadband at MTN Nigeria, emphasized the role of collaboration in achieving the ambitious broadband goal. “As we all know, data is the new oil. The only way to efficiently achieve the Federal Government’s objective of 70% broadband penetration by 2025 is through continued collaboration among all ecosystem players,” she said.
Ikenna-Emeka further highlighted MTN’s commitment to making broadband accessible to all Nigerians, describing the company’s services as designed to create shared value for customers and partners alike.
Chioma Chimere, Coordinating Managing Director of TD Africa, noted the ICT sector’s enormous potential to drive economic growth, even amid challenging times. “Embedded in the seeming low lights are lots of opportunities. If you’re in the ICT sector, you’ll find our opportunities are even larger because this is an industry that evolves and grows daily,” she said.
The forum also served as a platform for MTN Nigeria to detail the process for becoming a partner and benefiting from its broadband ecosystem, further aligning with the 2020-2025 National Broadband Plan.
Inaugurated by the Federal Government in 2019, the plan aims to achieve a broadband penetration rate of 70% by 2025, with effective coverage for at least 90% of the population. As of July 2022, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reported a penetration rate of 44.5%, showing steady progress towards the national goal.
This collaboration between MTN Nigeria and TD Africa underscores the critical role of partnerships in advancing broadband accessibility, a cornerstone of Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
