The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has launched the reconstruction of a collapsed flood control embankment in Muye, Lapai LGA, Niger State, to mitigate annual flood disasters affecting local farmers.
Flagging off the project, Acting Managing Director of N-HYPPADEC, Jimoh Haruna Gabi, revealed that the construction would cost over ₦600 million. He added that the commission would also rebuild access roads and reclaim farmlands, ensuring farmers and fishermen can resume their traditional livelihoods.
The initiative follows appeals from affected communities, channeled through House of Representatives member Abdullahi Mahmud. Mahmud stated that the project would significantly revive the local economy by restoring farming activities.
However, Muye Ward Head, Alhaji Salihu Muhammad, expressed concerns over previous embankment failures, urging contractors to collaborate with locals for a sustainable solution.
