The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for justice for five Osun State University (UNIOSUN) students who died in a road accident near Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a petition to President Bola Tinubu dated March 24, 2025, NANS South West General Secretary, Oluwole Olutunde Aboke, alongside NAUS CMC Osun and NANS South West (Zone D), accused Silver Transport Company of negligence. The group claimed the company’s indifference and failure to take responsibility contributed to the tragic accident.
NANS condemned the transport company’s silence, stating it had neither released an official statement nor offered condolences to the victims’ families. “This silence is an insult to the bereaved families and a blatant disregard for human lives and public safety,” the petition read.
The students urged the federal government to launch an independent investigation into the accident and hold the transport company accountable for any safety violations. They demanded that, if found guilty, the company’s operations should be shut down indefinitely to prevent future tragedies.
NANS also called on the Ministry of Transportation to review the company’s operational license and ensure all transport firms comply with strict safety standards. They insisted that the victims’ families deserve justice and full compensation for their loss.
Warning against any attempt to cover up the case, NANS urged the Inspector General of Police and the Osun State Commissioner of Police to ensure a fair investigation. The association threatened mass protests if immediate action was not taken, stating, “Nigerian students will not remain silent while innocent lives continue to be endangered by corporate irresponsibility.”
