Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has called for regular drug tests for National Assembly members after Kogi West Senator, Sunday Karimi, made remarks about her. Karimi defended former Governor Yahaya Bello, claiming recent Senate events justified Bello’s past treatment of Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Speaking to journalists in Lokoja, Karimi insisted that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s accusations against Bello before the National Assembly elections may have been unfounded. “I can confidently say that the former governor may not have been at fault for the issues Akpoti-Uduaghan previously accused him of,” he stated.
He also linked her suspension to her dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, saying, “Former Governor Yahaya Bello must have seen it coming. Other Kogi lawmakers and I tried to prevent embarrassment for the state, but our efforts were ignored.”
Akpoti-Uduaghan was recently suspended for six months after accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment, a move that sparked controversy within the Senate.
Reacting to Karimi’s statements, she criticized the behavior of lawmakers and suggested a solution. “NDLEA needs to conduct periodic tests on Senators. That singular process will save the parliament from erratic legislative hallucinations,” she said.
Her call for drug testing has stirred debates on accountability and conduct in the National Assembly, with many Nigerians watching closely to see if any action will be taken.
