The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has given MTN Nigeria the go-ahead to disconnect Exchange Telecommunications Limited due to unpaid debts.
In a statement on Friday, Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, said the decision was made after Exchange failed to pay its interconnect charges despite multiple notifications.
“The company was given a chance to explain the situation, but after reviewing the matter, the NCC found no valid reason for the unpaid debts,” the statement said.
Based on the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003 and the guidelines for disconnecting telecom operators, the disconnection will take effect in five days. After that, MTN will stop routing calls and data through Exchange but will use other channels to ensure its customers don’t experience service disruptions.
The NCC added that this action would remain in place until Exchange clears its debts.
Exchange Telecommunications has not yet commented on the matter.
