NCC Backs Cultural Content to Preserve Nigerian Heritage

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has pledged to support efforts to preserve Nigerian culture by ensuring telecommunication companies promote content that highlights and upholds the country’s cultural values.

This commitment was made by NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, during a meeting in Abuja with Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, the Executive Secretary of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO). The visit aimed to discuss how both organizations could work together to promote Nigerian culture.

Dr. Maida stressed the importance of creating homegrown content to counter the influence of foreign media. “If we don’t produce content that reflects our culture, the foreign content we consume will shape it instead,” he said. He also pointed out that some Nigerian films fail to showcase authentic cultural elements in language, clothing, and themes.

NICO proposed initiatives like using caller tunes, shortcodes, and robocalls to share cultural messages. Dr. Maida assured NCC’s support, acknowledging that digital platforms can play a key role in promoting Nigerian arts and traditions.

Otunba Ajiboye highlighted how technology can help bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, urging greater use of digital tools to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
