NCC Cracks Down on Counterfeit Phones, Warns Consumers of Risks

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is warning consumers about the dangers of using counterfeit and unapproved phones. These devices can lead to poor performance, security risks, and financial loss.

This warning follows a recent crackdown in Kano, where the NCC arrested representatives from three companies involved in selling fake and non-approved phones. The arrested individuals include Yahaya Ado of Gezawa Communications Limited, Nura Ahmed of Saleh Latest Venture, and Rufai Nuhu of Al Mansoor Communications. They were caught selling counterfeit Gionee phones and engaging in unauthorized sales of communication equipment. The suspects have been handed over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation.

Mallam Salisu Abdu, NCC’s Head of Enforcement, expressed concern over the widespread sale of counterfeit phones in Kano’s GSM Market on Beirut Street. He highlighted that many vendors in the market lacked the required licenses from the NCC.

The NCC is urging consumers to only purchase approved devices and be cautious of counterfeit products that could cause harm.
