The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has warned consumers against buying and using counterfeit or non-approved phones, stressing that these devices can negatively affect service quality and leave users exposed to security risks and financial losses.
The warning follows a recent operation in Kano, where NCC enforcement officers arrested representatives from three companies for selling counterfeit and non-approved phones. These individuals have been handed over to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation.
Among those arrested was Yahaya Ado of Gezawa Communications Limited, who was caught selling fake Gionee phones without showing any proof of permission from the NCC. Nura Ahmed of Saleh Latest Venture and Rufai Nuhu of Al Mansoor Communications were also arrested for selling and installing phones without the proper licenses.
Mallam Salisu Abdu, head of NCC’s enforcement team, expressed concern about the prevalence of counterfeit phones in Kano’s GSM Market on Beirut Street, highlighting that many vendors in the area were operating without the necessary approvals from the Commission.
The NCC is urging consumers to be careful when purchasing phones and to report any suspicious sales to protect themselves and the telecommunications industry.
