The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has pushed the deadline for linking SIM cards to the National Identity Number (NIN) to September 14, 2024. The announcement was made on Wednesday, with a directive to all mobile network providers to complete the process by the new date.
According to the NCC, over 153 million SIM cards have already been linked to NINs, which shows a 96% compliance rate. This is a huge improvement compared to the 69.7% recorded at the start of 2024.
The Commission’s spokesperson, Reuben Muoka, explained that this is the final phase of the SIM-NIN linkage exercise and urged Nigerians to cooperate to ensure 100% compliance. He added that linking SIMs to NINs is important for improving digital security, preventing fraud, and boosting trust in online transactions.
The NCC also warned against the sale of pre-registered SIM cards, calling it a serious threat to national security. Investigations have uncovered cases where individuals held thousands of SIM cards, with some exceeding 100,000.
Nigerians who haven’t completed the process or are having issues with verification were advised to visit their mobile service providers or use approved online platforms to update their details before the deadline.
The Commission reminded the public that selling or buying pre-registered SIM cards is illegal and punishable by law. It urged citizens to report such activities through its toll-free line (622) or its social media channels.
