The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced new, harmonized short codes for telecom services, aiming to make it easier for Nigerians to access these services across different mobile networks. The goal is to standardize the codes so that no matter which mobile network a customer uses, the same code will work for services like checking airtime balance or managing data plans.
The new short codes will take effect by May 17, 2023, with the old codes running alongside them until then. Some of the key new codes include:
300 for Call Centre/Help Desk
301 for Voice Mail Deposit
302 for Voice Mail Retrieval
303 for Borrow Services
305 for Stop Service
310 for Check Balance
311 for Credit Recharge
312 for Data Plan
321 for Share Services
323 for Data Plan Balance
996 for SIM Registration/NIN-SIM Linkage Verification
2442 for Do-Not-Disturb (DND) Complaint
3232 for Porting Services (Mobile Number Portability)
This new system is designed to make it simpler for consumers to remember and use the codes, improving their experience with telecom services. It will also help providers use the freed-up old codes for other services, making the telecom system more efficient.
