NCC Issues Warnings to Protect Nigerians from Rising Cyber Threats

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued several important warnings to help Nigerians protect themselves from online threats. These warnings come after cybercriminals have found new ways to target and steal sensitive information from users.

The NCC’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has alerted Nigerians about phishing emails that contain Microsoft OneNote attachments. When clicked, these attachments can install malware that lets hackers control the victim’s device remotely. This could lead to personal information being stolen. The NCC-CSIRT recommends that users do not open attachments from unfamiliar senders, close any application that warns about potential damage from a link or attachment, and contact a security administrator if they are unsure about an email.

Another warning involves a fake Pokémon card game website that spreads malware. Known as NetSupport RAT, this malware allows attackers to control infected computers, steal files, and install more harmful software. The NCC-CSIRT advises users to avoid suspicious websites and only download apps from trusted sources.

The NCC has also discovered several malicious apps on the Google Play Store. These apps, which appear as games or investment services, have been downloaded over 450,000 times and are designed to steal personal information. Some of these apps include Golden Hunt, Reflector, Seven Golden Wolf Blackjack, and Lucky Clover. The NCC recommends that users avoid downloading apps from untrusted sources and delete any suspicious ones from their devices.

The NCC also warned Samsung Galaxy users about vulnerabilities in the Galaxy App Store app, particularly on devices running Android 12 or older. These security flaws can let unwanted apps be installed or allow hackers to run harmful code. Samsung users are urged to update their Galaxy App Store as soon as possible to fix these issues.

The NCC-CSIRT is dedicated to helping protect Nigerians from cyber threats. It works with the government’s ngCERT to reduce risks and ensure the safety of Nigeria’s digital space. Nigerians are encouraged to stay alert, follow security tips, and protect their personal data.
