The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved the use of the 6GHz frequency band for unlicensed Wi-Fi to improve internet access across Nigeria. This move aims to address the increasing demand for faster internet and more reliable connectivity.
Speaking at the Annual Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies in Lagos, the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, explained that existing Wi-Fi bands like 2.4GHz and 5GHz are now overcrowded due to heavy use. Opening the 6GHz band, which ranges from 5925 MHz to 7125 MHz, will allow more devices to connect faster and support high-tech applications like video streaming and virtual reality.
Dr. Maida, represented by Engr. Abraham Oshadami, said Wi-Fi is essential for both homes and businesses, providing a backbone for internet use. He added that the additional spectrum will help handle the growing demand for data and improve service quality, especially in areas where cellular networks are congested.
Support for Infrastructure Upgrades
Telecom operators welcomed the decision but called on the government for financial support to upgrade their networks. The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, highlighted the high cost of equipment and infrastructure expansion. Represented by Gbolahan Awonuga, Adebayo urged the government to provide funding and reduce costs associated with deploying new technologies.
The President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Tony Emoekpere, described the 6GHz band as a critical tool for future telecom growth. He stressed the need for policies that encourage public-private partnerships, simplify regulations, and lower operational costs like Right of Way (RoW) charges. Emoekpere also emphasized the importance of supporting smaller internet service providers (ISPs), particularly in rural areas, to expand broadband access.
Boosting Broadband and Digital Transformation
Engr. Atiku Lawal, head of Spectrum Administration at NCC, noted that Nigeria is joining over 70 countries already using the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 technology. He explained that this new band would allow wider and faster channels, supporting innovations and improving connectivity in homes, offices, and public spaces like airports.
The NCC’s decision marks a significant step toward improving internet access across Nigeria, promoting digital inclusion, and positioning the telecom industry for future growth.
