NCC Partners NSCDC to Combat Telecom Crimes, Strengthen Sector Security

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has partnered with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to fight crimes affecting the telecom sector, such as vandalism of telecom equipment and fraudulent SIM card registrations.

The partnership was announced in a statement by NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, in Abuja yesterday.

At a workshop held for NSCDC senior staff in the South West Zone, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta, commended the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two agencies. The workshop aimed to explore how the NSCDC could use existing laws and guidelines to address criminal activities in the telecom industry.

Represented by Ephraim Nwokonneya, Director of Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement at NCC, Prof. Danbatta emphasized that the NCC has long collaborated with law enforcement agencies, especially the NSCDC, to protect the telecom sector from crime.

“These criminal activities, including telecom infrastructure theft, fraudulent SIM card registration, and illegal call masking, threaten the sector and national security,” he said.

Danbatta noted that while the NSCDC has been instrumental in assisting with raids and awareness campaigns, the workshop was meant to provide updates on new trends and regulations to strengthen efforts in tackling these crimes.

The workshop also addressed NCC’s operations, laws, and regulations, with NSCDC’s role in enforcing them, as presented by Salisu Abdu, NCC’s Head of Enforcement.
