The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a conducive environment for the expansion of digital infrastructure, a critical initiative aimed at driving the country’s digital economy forward. This pledge was made by the Executive Chairman/CEO of NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, at the FintechNGR Week held recently in Lagos.
Represented by the Head of Digital at NCC, Dr. Austin Nwaulune, Prof. Danbatta highlighted the Commission’s dedication to supporting digital businesses, fostering innovation, and developing the digital skills of Nigerians to ensure they can effectively engage with the growing digital services ecosystem. Danbatta emphasized that the evolving digital landscape is reshaping traditional business models, network structures, and how consumers access services, goods, and information.
The transformation of the digital economy is central to the Commission’s strategic focus, with Nigeria positioning itself to leverage the digital revolution to diversify its economy and achieve significant national objectives. In this regard, the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS) 2020-2030 serves as a critical roadmap, crafted in alignment with the mandate of the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy. Danbatta noted that the NDEPS is designed to make Nigeria a global leader in the digital economy, while also ensuring that all sectors of the nation benefit from the digital transformation.
On the significant strides made in broadband expansion, Prof. Danbatta touched on the successful issuance of the final awards for the 5G spectrum licenses, which saw licensees commence the rollout of 5G services from August 24, 2022. The introduction of 5G technology is expected to enhance network capacity, accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies, and create new business opportunities across various sectors of the economy.
As the digital economy continues to take shape in Nigeria, the NCC remains steadfast in its role as a key enabler of innovation, economic diversification, and the overall growth of the country’s digital infrastructure. The Commission’s ongoing efforts reflect a broader vision of transforming Nigeria into a global digital economy powerhouse.
