NCC Reveals Why Your Data Runs Out Fast

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has responded to complaints from Nigerians about the rapid exhaustion of mobile data. Many subscribers using networks like MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile have expressed concerns that their data finishes too quickly, with some blaming the service providers.

The NCC explained that several factors could cause fast data usage. One major reason is heavy usage, such as streaming videos, downloading large files, or using apps that consume a lot of data. Apps running in the background also use data even when not actively in use.

Another issue is automatic updates for apps and operating systems, which can silently consume significant amounts of data. Location services, like those used in navigation apps such as Google Maps, are also data-heavy. Additionally, some apps display ads that use data, even if users don’t interact with them.

The NCC highlighted that data roaming during international travel can quickly add to costs and lead to faster data usage. Malware and viruses on a device can also secretly use up data without the user’s knowledge.

To manage data effectively, the NCC advised users to turn off location services for unnecessary apps, use ad-blockers to reduce data consumed by ads, and connect to Wi-Fi whenever possible, such as at home or in public places. For those who frequently run out of data, the Commission recommended upgrading to a bigger data plan.

The NCC assured subscribers that these steps would help them take control of their data usage and reduce unexpected depletion.
