Niger Shuts Two Schools Over Gang Violence

The Niger State Government has ordered the closure of two secondary schools in Minna following violent clashes between rival student gangs.

The affected schools, Government Day Secondary School, Bosso Road, and Father O’Connell Science College, will remain closed indefinitely, according to the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Hadiza Mohammed.

She stated that the decision was taken due to repeated fights involving students and local youths, which have led to serious violence and even deaths.

Reports indicate that students in these schools have formed gangs, engaging in clashes that have escalated over time. The government fears the situation could spread to other schools if not addressed urgently.

Authorities are now working on strategies to curb gangsterism in schools and ensure the safety of students and residents in Minna.

The Commissioner emphasized that the closure will remain in effect until further notice, as security agencies and school authorities collaborate to restore order.
