Nigeria, Cuba’s Role in Ending Apartheid

Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has revealed that a strategic alliance between Nigeria and Cuba was instrumental in dismantling apartheid in Southern Africa. He made this statement during a private meeting with Cuba’s Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez Parilla, in Nigeria.

Olawepo-Hashim highlighted Cuba’s military involvement in the 1988 Battle of Cuito Cuanavale in Angola, where Cuban forces fought alongside Angolan troops against South African forces. He noted that this victory, combined with Nigeria’s diplomatic backing, helped accelerate Namibia’s independence and the eventual collapse of apartheid in South Africa.

Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Minister Parilla, he recalled their time as members of the International Students Movement in the 1980s. Both had served as delegates at the 13th World Festival of Students in North Korea, a gathering that strengthened international solidarity among young political leaders.

Beyond politics, Olawepo-Hashim emphasized the deep cultural connections between Nigeria and Cuba. He pointed out that many Cubans of African descent trace their lineage to Nigeria’s Yoruba, Efik, and Ibibio ethnic groups, highlighting a historical bond that extends beyond diplomacy.

“The bonds between Nigeria and Cuba go beyond politics. They are rooted in shared ancestry and a common struggle for freedom and justice,” he stated.

Minister Parilla’s visit to Nigeria signals a renewed push for stronger bilateral ties, with both countries exploring deeper collaboration in trade, education, healthcare, and cultural exchange.
