Nigeria Eyes 2030 Commonwealth Games Bid

Nigeria has officially declared its intention to bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Abuja as the proposed host city.

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) confirmed on Monday that it successfully met the March 28 deadline for submission of interest. However, the next step hinges on formal backing from the federal government.

“Nigeria’s bid will present a unique opportunity to showcase our development, enhance our global standing, and invigorate our sports culture,” NOC spokesperson Tony Nezianya stated.

Abuja last hosted a major multi-sport event in 2003 during the African Games, an experience that could bolster Nigeria’s ability to organize a large-scale competition. The bid also aims to drive investment in sports infrastructure, transportation, and accommodations, potentially revitalizing the local economy and creating job opportunities in construction, hospitality, and event management.

Beyond economic gains, the Games could serve as inspiration for a new generation of athletes, positioning Nigeria as a hub for global sporting excellence.

This announcement aligns with a busy international sporting schedule, including the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and Africa’s first-ever Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, later that year.
