Nigeria Showcases Digital Innovation at APRA 2024

Nigeria showcased its progress in digital innovation and infrastructure development at the 35th African Public Relations Association (APRA) conference held from May 13 to 17, 2024, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) shared insights into its efforts to promote digital inclusion and enhance access to technology across the country.

Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, the Head of Media Management Relations at the NCC, delivered a presentation titled “Digital Inclusion as Arbiter of Accessible PR: A Case of the Nigerian Communications Commission.” His talk outlined 36 initiatives by the NCC, focusing on expanding digital infrastructure, supporting small businesses, advancing education, and equipping young Nigerians with digital skills.

The initiatives included programs to improve digital literacy among teachers and students, enhance access to technology in rural areas, support innovation and entrepreneurship, and address the needs of persons with disabilities. Through its Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), the NCC has collaborated with stakeholders to implement these projects, helping to bridge the digital divide and create opportunities for more Nigerians to participate in the digital economy.

Dr. Ibietan emphasized the significance of digital inclusion, describing it as the ability for individuals and communities to access and effectively use digital tools. He noted that digital inclusion supports education, fosters innovation, boosts civic participation, and helps reduce social inequalities.

He also highlighted how Nigeria’s investments in broadband infrastructure played a crucial role during the COVID-19 pandemic by enabling businesses, schools, and government activities to transition online, minimizing disruptions caused by the crisis.

The APRA conference featured over 20 presentations on the theme “One Africa, One Voice: Bridging Africa’s Communication Divide.” Dr. Ibietan’s presentation stood out as it was the only one showcasing a country’s digital infrastructure achievements. He called for improved communication and collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that digital investments deliver maximum benefits to society.
