For the first time, Nigeria will introduce the Rubella Virus Vaccine before the end of the year, according to Nneka Onwu, South East Zonal Consultant at the Center for Well-being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions.
Onwu shared this update with LEADERSHIP after an advocacy visit to the Abia State Ministry of Information’s Permanent Secretary, Chris Onwuegbu, in Umuahia.
She explained that the visit aimed to raise public awareness about the dangers of Rubella and the available solutions to combat the virus.
The vaccine introduction aligns with the Nigerian government’s broader efforts to improve public health and prevent infectious diseases.
Onwu emphasized that public sensitization is crucial to ensuring widespread acceptance and effective immunization coverage.
Health experts believe this move will significantly reduce Rubella-related birth defects and improve maternal and child health nationwide.
