Nigeria’s First Lady Opens African Women’s Volleyball Championship

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, officially opened the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Inter-Club Championship in Abuja yesterday. The tournament, hosted at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, will run until April 14, featuring 24 clubs from across the continent, including newcomers from Botswana, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, and Benin Republic.

Prominent teams such as Egypt’s Al Ahly and Zamalek, along with Nigeria’s Customs Service Women Volleyball Club, are among the competitors. The opening match, held ahead of the official ceremony, saw the Rwandan team APR deliver an impressive 3-1 win over Tunisia’s CFC, with set scores of 18-25, 26-24, 25-23, and 25-23.

CFC initially dominated the match, taking the first set 25-18 with powerful hitting. However, APR rallied in the second set, overcoming an early deficit to secure a narrow 26-24 victory. The third set saw APR show resilience with strong blocking and solid teamwork, winning 25-23.

The fourth set was a tense battle, with CFC closing the gap to 23-22. However, APR pushed forward with renewed energy, eventually sealing the match 25-23 to complete the 3-1 win. This remarkable comeback by APR in their Pool A opener set an exciting tone for the rest of the tournament.

The competition promises to showcase top-level volleyball talent and bring attention to the growing strength of women’s sports across Africa. With clubs from a variety of nations participating, the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Inter-Club Championship is expected to be a thrilling event.
