NPSA Criticizes FG’s Role in Rivers Crisis

Prof. Hassan Saliu, the association urged the government to act as a neutral mediator rather than taking sides.

NPSA also aligned with legal perspectives that oppose the suspension of democratic institutions during political conflicts. The association warned that such actions undermine the democratic rights of Rivers State residents and could set a dangerous precedent.

The group expressed concerns over the long-term implications of the emergency rule in the state. “Historically, such declarations provide only temporary relief. Given the deep-seated political tensions in Rivers, an extension of the declaration is likely, raising concerns about prolonged emergency rule,” the statement read.

While noting that the National Assembly has approved the emergency rule, NPSA recalled past instances where such measures led to complications. The case of Governor Joshua Dariye’s reinstatement in Plateau State and adjustments made during the Jonathan administration were cited as lessons on the complexities of emergency rule.

NPSA urged Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to embrace peace, stating that both leaders contributed to the crisis. “The two gentlemen are culpable and must realize that their actions or inactions have brought about the emergency rule in the state,” the group stated.

The association also warned that Rivers State’s economic importance to Nigeria cannot be ignored. “The state’s strategic location and revenue contributions make it a critical hotspot. The authorities in Abuja must carefully consider their approach to managing this crisis,” it concluded.
