Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been impeached. His replacement, Mojisola Meranda, was quickly elected to take his place. Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, is actually the first female speaker in the Lagos House of Assembly.
Obasa’s impeachment comes after he made some controversial comments about the Lagos 2027 governorship. He claimed he had the experience and qualifications to run for governor, which didn’t sit well with some people. There were also allegations of financial misconduct, including spending N17 billion on a gate to the Assembly complex and mishandling constituency funds and projects.
The Deputy Chief Whip, Hon Fatai Mojeed, has also been elected as the Deputy Speaker. It’s worth noting that Obasa had denied any wrongdoing and claimed the allegations were politically motivated.
