Kenneth Okonkwo has stated that he will support a southern or northern candidate who agrees to serve only a single four-year term.
Speaking on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, Okonkwo emphasized the need for fairness and equity, aligning with Nigeria’s rotational presidency tradition. “Who is going to do four years will influence who I support because I still believe in equity and justice,” he said.
Okonkwo, who left the Labour Party in February 2025, revealed he is open to joining the opposition coalition aiming to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His comments come amid rising speculation about a coalition, fueled by former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
El-Rufai has recently met with opposition leaders, including former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar. Okonkwo himself also met with Atiku, stressing the need for opposition unity to defeat the APC.
He described the Tinubu administration as incompetent, arguing that a strong opposition coalition is necessary for change. “If the opposition is serious about wresting power, they must come together and act as one. That’s what APC did in 2013, and it worked in 2015,” he noted.
Okonkwo reaffirmed his commitment to coalition talks, stating that he remains open to discussions with various political groups to strengthen the opposition’s chances in the 2027 election.
