Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, are locked in a heated exchange over allegations of N96 billion fraud involving local government funds.
Over the weekend, Okpebholo revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to prosecute some recently impeached local government chairmen accused of looting over N95 billion from public funds.
The governor also alleged that Obaseki, along with leaders of the factional Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was involved in the financial misconduct, further intensifying the political tension in the state.
In response, Obaseki dismissed the claims, describing them as a desperate attempt to justify what he called an unconstitutional attack on democratically elected council officials.
According to a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Obaseki insisted that the allegations were politically motivated and aimed at discrediting his administration.
The controversy comes as Okpebholo received the report of the Administrative Panel of Enquiry, which was set up on December 18, 2024, to investigate the financial activities of the impeached 18 local government chairmen between September 2023 and November 2024.
