Olubadan Nullifies Sarkin Sasa Title, Affirms Baale’s Authority

Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has declared the title of Sarkin Sasa in Akinyele Local Government Area null and void, stating that it is not recognized under the Ibadan Traditional Chieftaincy Law.

The declaration was made on Monday during the Olubadan-In-Council meeting at his Oke Aremo palace in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The last Sarkin Sasa, Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin Katsina, was the Chairman of the Council of Arewa Traditional Rulers in the 17 Southern States of Nigeria. Following his death, his son, Ahmed Haruna (Ciroma), was nominated as his successor by the family and the traditional councils of the 17 Southern states without seeking Olubadan’s consent.

In response, the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan, Gbenga Ayoade, confirmed that Chief Akinade Ajani Amusa is the only recognized Baale of Sasa land and the accredited representative of the Olubadan.

“All individuals and groups in Sasa land are under the authority of Baale Akinade Ajani Amusa. It is imperative that he is accorded the appropriate respect and authority,” the statement read.

The Olubadan warned that any defiance against the Baale’s authority would be met with serious sanctions, labeling any such action as an affront to the Olubadan stool.
