Onitsha Traditional Council Denies Threat Report

Imeobi Onitsha Traditional Council has dismissed media reports alleging that His Majesty, Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe (Agbogidi), the Obi of Onitsha, issued a warning to Northern youths in Onitsha following the recent killing of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State.

In a statement signed by Chief Osita Anionwu, the Chief of Staff to the Obi of Onitsha, the council described the trending report as false, fabricated, and misleading. The statement, dated April 3, 2025, urged the public to disregard the claims.

“The Palace of the Obi of Onitsha wishes to inform the general public that His Majesty has made no statement regarding the recent killings in Edo State. Furthermore, he has issued no warning to anyone on the matter,” the statement read.

The council expressed concern over the growing trend of fake statements being attributed to the Onitsha monarch, warning that such misinformation could stir tension among communities. “This is another instance of attributing fake statements to His Majesty, aimed at creating disaffection,” the statement added.

The traditional ruler, who serves as a champion of peace and unity, reaffirmed his commitment to fostering harmony among all Nigerians, regardless of ethnic or regional differences. “Let us work together to build bridges, not walls,” the statement emphasized.

The council called on the public and media organizations to verify reports before spreading misinformation, urging Nigerians to focus on unity rather than divisive narratives.
