Ortom Cancels 64th Birthday Over Benue Killings

Former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has cancelled plans to celebrate his 64th birthday in a show of solidarity with victims of recent violent attacks across the state. The decision comes amid renewed assaults by suspected Fulani terrorists in seven local government areas.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Terver Akase, Ortom said the ongoing killings and displacement of innocent citizens made it inappropriate to hold any form of celebration. “The former governor has decided not to hold any celebration or festivities,” the statement noted.

Ortom, who served as governor of Benue from 2015 to 2023, said his heart is with the victims and their families. Instead of festivities, he pledged to use the occasion to reflect and stand with those suffering due to the insecurity ravaging communities across the state.

He extended heartfelt sympathies to affected families and called on residents to offer prayers for divine intervention to bring an end to the bloodshed and restore peace. “This is a time for solemn reflection and prayer,” Ortom said.

The ex-governor also urged citizens to remember leaders in their prayers, including President Bola Tinubu, Governor Hyacinth Alia, and SGF Senator George Akume, asking God to grant them wisdom to tackle the security challenges confronting Benue and the nation.

Despite the somber tone, Ortom expressed gratitude to God for his life, health, and opportunities to serve. “I thank God Almighty for His mercy and blessings over the past 64 years and reaffirm my commitment to the service of God and humanity,” he said.
