Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has signed Executive Order 001 of 2025, suspending all illegal mining activities across the state to protect the environment, tackle security threats, and safeguard public welfare.
He made the announcement during a stakeholder engagement at the Twin Theatre, New Government House, Jos, where he met with traditional rulers, community leaders, local government chairmen, and mining representatives.
The governor emphasized that the ban aims to curb illegal mining, prevent land degradation, combat child labor, and address rising security concerns linked to unregulated mineral extraction.
Authorities have been directed to strictly enforce the order, warning that violators will face legal consequences.
Stakeholders at the meeting welcomed the move, urging the government to implement sustainable mining policies that balance economic growth with environmental and social responsibility.
The suspension is part of a broader strategy to restore order in the mining sector, ensuring only licensed operators adhere to proper regulations.
