A powerful rainstorm swept through several communities in Ijero Local Government Area of Ekiti State, leaving behind a trail of destruction on Wednesday. Over 50 buildings, including homes, shops, and schools, were damaged across Ipoti, Ejiyan, Owatedo, and Odo Owa Ekiti.
On Thursday, Governor Biodun Oyebanji visited the affected areas, represented by Deputy Governor Chief (Mrs.) Monisade Afuye. She sympathised with victims and promised that the state would assist in repairing the damaged buildings as quickly as possible.
Governor Oyebanji expressed concern over the repeated rainstorms in Ekiti, which have left many residents homeless. He advised property owners to maintain their buildings regularly, replacing old roofs and weak structures to minimize damage during heavy rains.
To further reduce the risk, the governor urged residents to plant trees around their homes to serve as windbreakers. He also called on traditional rulers to promote this practice within their communities.
“I am saddened seeing people being homeless as a result of rainstorms. We promise that the State Emergency Management Agency will come to assess the damage and ensure help reaches those affected. God shall heal your wounds,” Oyebanji said.
The Olupoti of Ipoti, Oba Oladipupo Kolade, and the Oloja-Owa of Owatedo, Oba Adebayo Adewole, thanked the government for its swift response. They described the destruction as heartbreaking and called for urgent support to ease the suffering of affected families.
