First Lady Remi Tinubu has weighed in on the ongoing controversy in the 10th Senate, dismissing concerns over alleged sexual harassment involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Speaking to journalists ahead of International Women’s Day, Mrs Tinubu said the Senate remains a “matured” institution that deserves respect, regardless of the allegations making headlines. “The Senate should be a place of honour, not controversy,” she said.
When asked about her silence on the harassment allegations, the First Lady insisted lawmakers were handling the situation appropriately. “The Senate is doing what is needful because that’s what it is. It’s a matured chamber and should be treated with respect,” she stated.
Drawing from her own experience as a former senator, Mrs Tinubu advised Nigerian women to assert themselves in leadership positions to avoid being disrespected. “Women, raise yourself. Don’t be in a position where men will talk to you anyhow. You can always shut them down before they start,” she added.
As Nigeria prepares to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, the First Lady also praised the resilience and achievements of Nigerian women, highlighting role models like Zuriel Oduwole, who has been a strong voice for peace and youth empowerment.
Mrs Tinubu urged young Nigerian women to step boldly into leadership roles, stressing that their contributions are crucial for national development and the future of the country.
