Reps in Fiery Exchange Over Rivers Emergency Rule as Plenary Begins

A tense confrontation unfolded in the House of Representatives on Wednesday as two female lawmakers engaged in a heated argument over the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

Hon. Blessing Amadi from Rivers and Hon. Marie Ebikake were seen in a shouting match just before the plenary session commenced. The exchange created a brief disruption, but proceedings soon resumed under the leadership of Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.

President Bola Tinubu had, on Tuesday, imposed a state of emergency in Rivers State in response to the prolonged political crisis in the region.

In a nationwide address, the president announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly for six months.

To manage the affairs of the state during this period, Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the administrator for an initial six-month term.

The president’s decision was based on Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the federal government to declare a state of emergency in situations of national threat, disaster, or security concerns, allowing the temporary suspension of normal governance to restore order.
