The House of Representatives has advanced 32 constitutional amendment bills, including a proposal to create the office of the Prime Minister as Head of Government and the President as Head of State. The bills passed their second reading during Thursday’s plenary session.
Among the proposed amendments is a bill seeking to allocate specific seats for women in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly to promote gender representation.
Another key bill aims to shorten the timeline for pre-election petition cases by establishing dedicated tribunals and regulating the suspension of lawmakers from legislative duties.
Additionally, lawmakers considered a bill to revise eligibility requirements for the offices of President, Vice President, Governor, and Deputy Governor.
Other proposed amendments include a review of the Federal Capital Territory’s role in presidential elections and bills advocating for the creation of Wan State and Gobir State.
With this latest development, the total number of constitutional amendment bills that have passed second reading in the House of Representatives now stands at 113.
