Reps. Passes Bills for South-South and North West Development Commissions, Approves NCC 2024 Budget

The House of Representatives has approved two important bills aimed at boosting development in Nigeria’s key regions.

The first bill establishes the South-South Development Commission, which will manage funds from the Federation Account and other sources, including donations and grants. This commission will focus on resolving infrastructural deficits, tackling militancy, handling communal crises, and addressing environmental issues in the South-South region.

The second bill creates the North West Development Commission. This commission will focus on the settlement, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of infrastructure, such as roads and homes, that have been damaged by crises. It will also work on reducing poverty, improving literacy, and addressing environmental challenges in the North West.

Additionally, the House passed the N549.67 billion budget for the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for 2024. The budget includes N115.05 billion for running costs, N18.02 billion for capital projects, N66.78 billion for special projects, and N17 billion for the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF). The NCC will also transfer N332.80 billion to the federal government, with N2,044 allocated for surplus or deficit adjustments for the financial year ending December 31, 2024.
