The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has officially fixed August 9, 2025, as the date for fresh Local Government elections in the state.
This decision comes after the Supreme Court nullified the previous elections held in 2024, citing non-compliance with the Electoral Act. The ruling voided all results declared in that election.
RSIEC chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Retired), made the announcement on Wednesday during a stakeholder meeting held at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt. During the meeting, the commission unveiled the official timetable and guidelines for the upcoming polls.
Justice Enebeli assured political parties and residents that RSIEC is committed to conducting a transparent, free, and fair election. He also urged all parties to strictly follow the laid-down rules and guidelines.
It will be recalled that the Supreme Court’s judgment on February 28, 2025, invalidated the October 5, 2024 local government elections in Rivers State, stating that RSIEC violated key provisions of the Electoral Act.
The nullified election had seen candidates from the Action Peoples Party (APP) winning 22 out of 23 chairmanship seats, largely due to the boycott by the state’s two biggest parties — the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
