Rivers Sole Administrator Apologises to House Committee, Seeks More Time to Brief Lawmakers

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), on Friday finally met with the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee overseeing the state’s affairs after missing two earlier invitations.

During the session in Abuja, Admiral Ibas apologised to the lawmakers for his absence, citing the “weighty and urgent demands” of stabilising governance in a state under emergency rule.

“I deeply regret my inability to attend earlier engagements with this esteemed committee,” Ibas said. “It wasn’t out of disregard but due to pressing responsibilities in managing a state navigating a fragile transitional period.”

He stressed his respect for the National Assembly and requested more time to prepare a comprehensive and accurate briefing that reflects the current realities in Rivers State.

“It’s essential that our engagement be done with depth, clarity, and accuracy,” he told lawmakers, acknowledging their oversight responsibilities.

In response, the committee’s chairman, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere (APC, Edo), accepted the apology and agreed to reschedule the briefing.

“In line with the House’s tradition of fairness and in view of the Administrator’s responsible tone, we have accepted his apology,” Ihonvbere said after the closed-door meeting.

He reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and democratic governance, noting that a new date for the briefing would be communicated soon.

The committee was constituted under Sections 11(4) and 88 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to monitor developments in Rivers State amid ongoing political tensions and the declaration of a state of emergency.
