Senate Slams Tunde Bakare’s Criticism as Politically Charged, Misleading

The Senate has sharply criticized recent remarks by Pastor Tunde Bakare, calling his comments on the National Assembly misleading, politically driven, and reflective of a limited understanding of its constitutional duties.

In a statement on Tuesday, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, said the legislature was compelled to respond to Bakare’s “sweeping generalisations and disparaging commentary,” warning that such rhetoric could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Bakare, a former vice-presidential candidate and presidential aspirant, had accused the National Assembly of failing in its oversight role and being too submissive to the executive arm of government—drawing comparisons to earlier parliaments that resisted controversial policies like the Third Term agenda.

Adaramodu countered that Bakare’s political past colored his criticisms, calling them a “biased and political ecumenical homily.” He emphasized that while Bakare remains a respected religious leader, he must also be viewed through the lens of his active political engagement.

“He is not only a cleric but also a political figure and lawyer, and should understand the constitutional limitations—especially concerning issues that are sub judice,” Adaramodu added, noting the Assembly’s commitment to due process and judicial independence.

The Senate reiterated that it would not be dragged into debates on matters before the courts, citing its respect for the rule of law.
