Senator Shehu Sani has explained why no senator openly supported suspended Kogi Central lawmaker, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, in her clash with Senate leadership.
Natasha was suspended last Thursday for six months after she was accused of breaching Senate rules and misconduct. This came after her confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements in the chamber.
Shehu Sani, a former senator from Kaduna Central, reacted to the suspension on Facebook. In his post, he shared his own experience, recalling how he almost faced a similar six-month suspension for revealing the real salaries and allowances of senators on live television.
According to Sani, Natasha’s bold accusation against Akpabio — alleging sexual harassment — made her untouchable among her colleagues. He claimed no senator wanted to publicly align with her out of fear of political backlash or personal victimisation.
“When I publicly disclosed the salaries and allowances of the Senators, it nearly earned me a SIX-month suspension if not for Divine Intervention. Just know that if you are there and you blow whistle too loudly, you will be ‘On your Own’, no senator go bring him head and neck to support you,” Sani wrote.
With Natasha now out of the Senate for six months, the silence of her colleagues raises questions about whether lawmakers are more interested in protecting themselves than standing up for one of their own.
