The people of Soku community in Rivers State have dismissed reports circulating on social media about an explosion on gas pipelines along the Soku-Abua-Rumuji Right of Way.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday, Secretary of the Soku Community Development Committee, Witness Alasia, described the reports as misleading and unfounded. However, he confirmed that there was a minor fire outbreak on the pipeline, which does not pose a significant threat.
The affected pipeline, he explained, belongs to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) company and transports gas from the Soku Gas Plant to NLNG’s facility on Bonny Island. He assured the public that Soku Gas Plant remains fully operational and safe.
“It is disheartening and worrisome that people will mischievously misinform the public with a baseless and untrue story,” Alasia stated, urging everyone to disregard the false reports.
Meanwhile, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) also refuted claims of an explosion at the plant. SPDC’s spokesman, Michael Adande, clarified that Shell has divested its assets in Soku to Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited.
“All good at Soku Gas Plant. It is not affected by any incident,” Adande said, adding that any concerns should be directed to the new asset owner.
