A General Court Martial (GCM) convened at the Headquarters of the 82 Division, Nigerian Army in Enugu, has sentenced Private Adamu Mohammed to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, Miss Hauwa Ali, in April 2024.
The same tribunal also sentenced Private Abubakar Yusuf to 10 years imprisonment for committing robbery at a mall in Enugu.
According to Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, Acting Deputy Director of 82 Division, the sentences were delivered after a thorough trial process that upheld the Armed Forces Act.
Brigadier General Sadisu Buhari, President of the GCM, stated that Private Mohammed was found guilty under Section 106(a) of the Armed Forces Act, and despite a plea for leniency, the court ruled that “the law had to be applied to its fullest in the interest of justice and societal decorum.”
In Yusuf’s case, the panel was unable to reach a unanimous decision to impose the maximum sentence under Section 107(2). Instead, relying on Section 140(3) of the Act, the court handed him a 10-year sentence.
Both judgments are subject to confirmation by the endorsing authority, as per military judicial procedure.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to discipline and ethical standards, stating: “The wrong actions of a few do not reflect the values of the institution. Swift and decisive measures are taken to ensure accountability.”
These rulings are seen as part of ongoing efforts to maintain integrity and public trust in the military.
