Omoyele Sowore has declared his support for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Ushie Rita Uguamaye, also known as Raye, who is under fire for criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration in a viral video.
Sowore, in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, revealed that he met with Uguamaye in Lagos and would accompany her to the NYSC Local Government Inspector’s (LGI) office, along with a legal team. “The journey with youth Corper, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, has commenced in Lagos. She is scheduled to appear before the LGI today, and we will escort her to their offices. We are all en route with attorneys,” he wrote.
Uguamaye had sparked controversy after posting a TikTok video in which she expressed frustration over Nigeria’s economic struggles and openly criticized President Tinubu’s leadership. Following the video’s circulation, she claimed to have received threats.
The NYSC subsequently summoned her to appear before its LGI office in Eti-Osa 3 on Monday at 10 a.m., a move that has drawn widespread attention and raised concerns about potential disciplinary actions.
Sowore’s involvement has intensified public discourse on free speech and political dissent in Nigeria, with many questioning whether the NYSC’s actions amount to suppression of expression. Supporters argue that Uguamaye was merely exercising her right to voice concerns about governance.
As of press time, the NYSC has not issued an official statement regarding the situation, leaving uncertainty over the possible consequences Uguamaye might face.
