Speaker Calls for Urgent Reform of Local Government System

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s local government system. Speaking in Abuja on Monday during the opening of a national dialogue on local government and constitutional amendments, the Speaker, who was represented by Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, said these reforms are needed to address the many challenges local governments face.

Hon. Abbas emphasized that local governments are crucial to serving the people, as they are the closest tier of government. However, they face issues like inadequate funding, lack of autonomy, and interference from state governments, all of which limit their effectiveness.

He pointed out that one of the main obstacles is inadequate funding, which makes it difficult for local governments to provide essential services like education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He also stressed that local governments lack the independence needed to operate effectively and are often controlled by state governments.

Another issue raised was the poor quality of elections into local government councils. Speaker Abbas stated that these elections often lack competitiveness and can lead to corruption and bad governance.

While acknowledging the efforts made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in strengthening the local government system, Speaker Abbas stressed that more comprehensive reforms are necessary. He called for greater financial autonomy, better capacity-building for local officials, and transparent elections.

He also mentioned ongoing discussions with state governors and state lawmakers to ensure that local governments have the resources and independence needed to drive development at the grassroots level.
