The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has announced the indefinite postponement of the highly anticipated Qur’an Convention, originally scheduled for February 22, 2025.
In a statement signed by the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the postponement was attributed to the unexpectedly high number of interested participants.
The event, initially planned for the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, was set to accommodate 60,000 attendees, including 30,000 Huffaz (Qur’an memorisers) and 30,000 other participants. However, the number of accreditation requests has now exceeded 500,000.
Given the logistical challenges posed by such an overwhelming response, the organizers decided to delay the event to ensure proper planning and a more accommodating venue.
The Sultan reassured participants that a new date will be announced once the necessary arrangements are made to host the large turnout effectively.
This unprecedented level of interest highlights the growing enthusiasm for Qur’anic education and memorization in Nigeria, reinforcing the need for larger platforms to accommodate such gatherings in the future.
