Former Enyimba coach, Samson David Unuanel, remains optimistic about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup despite a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe on Tuesday in Uyo.
Victor Osimhen had put Nigeria ahead, but a late goal from Tawanda Chirewa denied the Super Eagles a much-needed victory, leaving fans frustrated with the team’s performance.
With six games played in the 10-match qualification series, Nigeria now sits in fourth place with seven points. South Africa leads the group after securing a 2-0 win against Benin, thanks to goals from Burnley’s Lyle Foster and Jayden Adams.
Despite the setback, Unuanel urged fans to remain hopeful, recalling how the Super Eagles defied the odds to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. “I am not losing hope yet on the Super Eagles because we have been in this position before and still qualified,” he said.
The former coach acknowledged the frustration among supporters but insisted it is too early to write off the team. “Many Nigerians may find it hard to believe, but nothing is decided until the final games are played,” he added.
“For all who care to hear, the 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe should not be seen as a disaster. All I know is that Nigeria will qualify,” Unuanel concluded.
