Supreme Court Backs PDP Leadership Decision

The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding the appointment of its National Secretary, stating that the matter is an internal party issue beyond judicial intervention. The ruling affirms that only the party’s internal mechanisms can determine leadership changes.

In response, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) declared that the decision validates Rt. Hon. SKE Udeh-Okoye as the rightful National Secretary. The party emphasized that his appointment followed due process, including nomination, endorsement, and ratification by relevant PDP organs.

According to PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the process began in October 2023 when the South East Zonal Executive Committee was directed to replace Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who had become the party’s governorship candidate in Imo State. The committee selected Udeh-Okoye, and the NWC formally approved him in November 2023.

The decision was subsequently endorsed by key PDP bodies, including the Board of Trustees, South East Zonal Caucus, and the PDP Governors’ Forum. It was also officially communicated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the general public.

PDP praised the Supreme Court for upholding party autonomy, calling it a victory for democracy. The party stressed that internal matters should remain within the party’s jurisdiction without external interference.

“The NWC urges all patriotic members of the PDP to remain united as we work together to move our great party forward,” the statement concluded.
