Supreme Court Ruling Favors Rivers Governor, Say Opposition Lawmakers

The Coalition of Opposition Lawmakers in the National Assembly has clarified that the Supreme Court’s dismissal of a suit filed by Rivers State was not a loss for Governor Siminalayi Fubara but rather in his favor. The apex court had on Monday dismissed an appeal by Governor Fubara challenging the legitimacy of 27 pro-Wike lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule.

According to the coalition’s spokesperson, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, the Supreme Court’s decision was based on Governor Fubara’s withdrawal of the appeal through his lead counsel, Yusuf Ali, SAN. Ugochinyere emphasized that the governor did not lose any case but chose to withdraw the appeal, particularly concerning the 2024 Rivers State budget, which had already been implemented.

The coalition’s statement aims to dispel misconceptions about the court ruling, highlighting that the withdrawal of the appeal was a strategic decision by the governor rather than a legal defeat.
