Telecom Operators Back Tariff Hike, Urge Gov’t Investment in Infrastructure

Telecom companies in Nigeria, through the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), have supported the government’s decision to increase tariffs in the sector. The hike, expected in the first quarter of the year, follows long-standing requests from telecom operators. Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, explained that while the increase won’t be as high as the 100% operators requested, it will be balanced to reflect the industry’s financial realities. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) will soon announce the new tariffs.

ATCON President Tony Izuagbe Emoekpere welcomed the review, calling it necessary due to rising costs and inflation. He acknowledged that while the 100% increase may sound high, it’s understandable given the industry’s challenges. Emoekpere also supported the government’s plan to invest in telecom infrastructure, saying it would help improve services and reduce vandalism, which has been a major issue in the sector.

Emoekpere also highlighted several challenges that telecom companies face, including multiple taxes and right-of-way delays. He noted that telecom companies paid over N2 trillion in taxes in 2023, which is unsustainable. He called for tax reforms and stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors to help boost infrastructure and support Nigeria’s digital economy. Additionally, Emoekpere urged the government to embrace emerging technologies like 5G, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to stay competitive globally.
