The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed that the technology-driven telecommunications sector has contributed a staggering $70 billion to Nigeria’s economy in recent years. This disclosure was made by the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, in his keynote speech at a Cyberchain event in Abuja.
Represented by Mrs. Eli Ella, the NCC’s Principal Manager for Digital Economy, Danbatta highlighted the transformative impact of digital technologies, including 5G, e-commerce, fintech, and big data, on the country’s GDP. He emphasized that these advancements have not only diversified Nigeria’s revenue base but also created significant employment opportunities, with over 500,000 jobs generated in both formal and informal sectors.
Danbatta stated, “Telecommunications has contributed over $70 billion to the Nigerian economy, provided over 500,000 jobs, and improved the lives of millions of Nigerians,” underscoring the crucial role of the sector in driving economic growth and development.
