The Importance of States in Internet Connectivity

Internet connectivity is key to modern economies. It sparks innovation, boosts productivity, and creates new opportunities for growth. Dr. Aminu Maida, head of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), explains that broadband connectivity is essential for digital progress, as it provides the infrastructure that supports digital services in many areas.

According to the World Bank, increasing broadband by 10% in developing countries can grow GDP by up to 1.38%, helping speed up economic development. Broadband is vital for driving the digital economy, creating jobs, and supporting new businesses. It also helps governments deliver services more efficiently, such as online business registrations and tax filings, which make processes quicker and cut down on delays.

Broadband also plays a big role in urban planning. Many states use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to better manage land use. Beyond that, it helps bridge the gap between those with and without access to digital tools, making the internet available to more people. It also boosts security and government systems, supporting crime prevention with surveillance, biometric ID systems, and data analysis. Digital platforms allow people to get involved in decision-making and hold officials accountable.

Dr. Maida says that broadband is about more than just fast internet. It transforms economies, improves services, promotes equality, and strengthens governance. It lays the groundwork for a more connected, fair, and efficient society where technology works for everyone, supporting long-term development.

Tony Izuagbe Emoekpere, President of ATCON, also recognized the potential of broadband but pointed out major obstacles. Insecurity, especially in northern and southeastern parts of Nigeria, remains a major problem. Criminal activities like kidnapping and terrorism are putting telecom projects at risk, endangering both local and foreign workers involved in building telecom infrastructure.
