Three Killed as Rainstorm Destroys Homes in Cross River

At least three people lost their lives in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State after a heavy downpour wreaked havoc on several communities. The storm, which struck on Tuesday, destroyed homes and left many residents struggling to find shelter.

The affected villages—Ezekwe, Okpodon, and Wanokom—were hit by powerful thunderstorms and strong winds. Trees were uprooted, houses collapsed, and some residents were buried under the debris. Among the casualties were two women and one man who died after their homes caved in.

This was the first major rainfall in the area this year, and it came with fierce winds that tore off rooftops and knocked down electricity poles, leaving the communities in darkness. Many residents have been left stranded with no immediate relief.

Dr. Fred Okem, Chairman of Yala Local Government, described the situation as devastating. He revealed that his administration had been working to improve roads and provide farm inputs before the disaster struck. “We had just started preparations for the farming season when this tragedy happened,” he said.

Okem lamented the high cost of roofing materials, making it difficult for affected families to rebuild. “Many people are now sleeping outside with their children, exposed to the harsh weather conditions,” he added, calling for urgent intervention.

The chairman appealed to the state and federal governments, as well as humanitarian organizations, to assist the victims. “We need urgent help from NEMA, SEMA, and well-meaning individuals to help these families rebuild before the rains intensify,” he pleaded.
